What is the evil eye?

The evil eye can be found all around the world. Its history dates back to ancient cultures and is even mentioned by the great writer Shakespeare in his plays. From the Brazilian Mal de ojo, to the Greek Mati (μάτι) and the Turkish Nazar Boncuk (Nazar boncuğu) it’s highly likely that you’ve encountered the evil eye at some point in your life. But what is the story behind the evil eye?

The evil eye is a curse believed to be cast by an evil glare, usually given to a person when they are unaware. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye from someone will cause bad luck. Amulets created to protect against the evil eye are also called nazar boncuğu. The nazar reflects the negative energy back to the person that is casting the curse and protects you from any harm.
